TRAM SPEEDS

The latest newsletter from Environment Not Trams (ENT) claims the trams could be dangerous and noisy in consequence of speeds up to 50mph south of Wilford Lane, adjacent housing. Somebody should tell the objectors what Wilford embankment was built for - not public open space, private amenity or derelict land. Steam locomotion in the past was louder and faster than the trams will be. A steet crossing on Wilford Lane does not provide danger from tram speed in proximity to road vehicles or pedestrians. The City and County Highways authorities accept the possibility of the street crossing, and the Railway Inspectorate will deliberate on tram safety. Public awareness of the issues is one matter, but scaremongering by tram opponents is another.

MORE ON THE OPINION POLL

The December 2002 newsletter of ENT has been distributed. It claims that support for the CW tram is a minority, at about 48%. But this is a contrivance by including people living miles away in Beeston and Chilwell, who will not use the CW tram on a regular basis. In a similar manner, in the public consultations earlier this year, about 80% of the “supporters?of the CQD route live miles away along Wilford embankment, people who have no intention of using the route, but instead see it as a dumping ground, since they do not want to live next to a tram on Wilford embankment. No wonder they cannot prove the CW trams will be noisy, following the trackbed of what was once a busy mainline railway - and they clearly don't like the fact that they are representing only 16% of the local population. But the councils know how unpopular the CW objection really is...
